What is rBST/rBGH?
These letters stand for recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) and
recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) but both mean the same thing.
All cows produce their own bovine growth hormone, but when these terms
are used they generally are meant to indicate the artificial hormone.
They have been used to increase milk production.
Why the controversy?
Since the hormones are
artificial and not naturally produced, they are suspect. One big point
of concern: cows who develop problems when injected with rBST are often
treated with antibiotics, and that could affect the milk too.
To date, there is no solid evidence that the milk from cows who have been treated with rBST has any significant health impact on humans. Having said that, there is lots of data to cast a shadow of concern, so we have chosen to take the safer path.
Does Yami use milk from cows who have been treated with
artificial hormones?
Never. Not sometimes, not anytime, not ever.
